Forty five cadet officers upon completion of the two-year long course of studies during a formal military ceremony, received their Diplomas, in the presence of a distinguished gathering of academics, parents, military officers and other invitees soon after the colourful academic procession, wended its way to the SLMA auditorium.

This special Diploma course, consists of both military and other academic spheres, contributes to the promotion of creative and innovative thinking, associated with the discharge of professional duties and their proficiency. The curriculum contains subjects such as military history, mathematics, languages, physics, chemistry, management basics, etc in addition to its focus on individual capacity-building.

The day’s Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, in the company of the Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University Prof. Mahinda S. Rupasinghe, SLMA Commandant, Brigadier I.P. Ranasinghe, was later on ushered to the venue in a colourful procession.

Next, was the formal declaration of the inauguration of the Diploma awarding ceremony, delivered by the Vice Chancellor, setting the stage to begin award of Diplomas to the recipients.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army was then invited to confer the Diplomas in Military Studies on the graduates.

The Chief Guest in his brief address to the occasion highlighted the importance of continued education since it is the lamp that illuminates one’s path leading towards success.

“The more it is gathered the brighter your path shall be. It also stimulates the use of wisdom which opens the mind’s eye to perceive and comprehend the depth of whatever we come into contact with. Your military professionalism will no doubt benefit you and more importantly it will bring about the desired change and development to the Army and in turn to the motherland”, the Commander said.

Giving a word of advice to the recipients, the Commander remarked; “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. A glance at the great figures who have left their names on the grand pages of history, confirms that they were motivated by this very thought. There is no mistake in following tradition, but there is much to be found which could further nourish our traditions as well as our civilization. The same applies to your profession too,” the Commander added.

Since 2005, the Officer Cadets who follow the 2-year military training at the SLMA, have been awarded with a Diploma in Military Studies. This Diploma is offered to the Officer Cadets who reach the required standards in both military and academic components. The academic component of the Diploma Programme is designed to expose the Officer Cadets to a whole range of subjects and skills that will enable them to think creatively and function professionally as career officers.
