Commander Shares New Year Thoughts with His Staff at AHQ

“EVERY Sri Lankan citizen warmly admires peace, friendship and cooperation. The whole nation is under the impression that the country would be blessed with a peaceful society in the near future. On this noble day, let’s determine to make their wish a reality.” So said Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka during his New Year address held at the Army Headquarters Wednesday (15).

Army Commander every year hosts his staff at Army Headquarters to tea on account of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebration.

Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka arrived at the venue around 9.00 a.m. as a section of Officers, Other Ranks and members of civil staff gathered in front of the Army Headquarters building.

“We have been able to reduce the LTTE landscape to a tiny swathe of 23 sq km land from previous 13,000 sq km. At the same time, the LTTE, crazy after the dream of Eelam, during recent times, faced the most humiliating defeat that they ever experienced in the history losing around 18,000 of their barbaric fighting terrorist cadres.”, Commander added during his speech.

He remembered the contribution made by soldiers, who sacrificed lives, went missing and became disable, to bring about success in the war against terrorism while wishing fast recovery to injured soldiers getting medical treatment at hospitals and courage to soldiers fighting in the lines.

Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka concluded extending his gratitude to parents and beloved ones of soldiers for donating their sons to the Army to fight for a worthy and noble cause.

After appreciating the assistance received from all in military and civil staff, Army Commander joined all ranks and civil staff at tea full of traditional New Year sweetmeats.

The event followed a visit by Commander to the Army hospital to see soldiers undergoing treatment for their injuries sustained in the war. President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Mrs. Anoma Fonseka, Director Army Medical Services Brigadier Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Senior Officers and a few of hospital staff joined the Army Chief in his visit during which Commander and President SVAB gave away gift parcels to all hospital inmates.
