Commander Praises Retiring Major General G.W.A Seneviratne’s Dedicated Services

Major General G.W.A Seneviratne USP psc, General Officer Commanding, 54 Infantry Division on the eve of his retirement from the Army after a landmark career of 34 years was invited this afternoon (10 Nov) to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, together with his spouse.

During the interactions, the Army Chief appreciated the services of the retiring Senior Officer and recalled memories in the battlefield and also in the post-war scenario. The Commander of the Army also inquired about his future plans and wished him good luck with his future endeavours.

While sharing a few pleasantries with the retiring Major General G.W.A Seneviratne USP psc, the Commander of the Army did not forget to share a few words with his wife who was present. He also did not fail to mention the support that the retiree’s family members have given the outgoing officer in the performance of his challenging roles.

Major General G.W.A Seneviratne USP psc, also in turn thanked the Commander of the Army for his wishes and guidance while mentioning the encouragement he received during his tenure of service in the organization.

Towards the end of the interactions, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the outgoing retiree as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a special gift to the family.

Here follows a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer;

Major General G.W.A Seneviratne USP psc, was enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 14 November 1989. Upon successful completion of military training at the Kotelawala Defence Academy and Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, in KDA Intake 07, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers on 14 November 1991. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the course of the span of service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 04 February 2023.

He has been holding the Office of the General Officer Commanding, the 54 Infantry Division at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Troop Commander of 5 Field Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, Adjutant of 5 Field Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, Squadron Commander of 5 Field Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, General Staff Officer 3 of Headquarters Engineer Brigade, Squadron Commander of 7th Field Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, Troop Commander at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Squadron Commander of 6th Field Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, Directing Staff of Officers Study Centre - Sri Lanka Military Academy, Senior Instructor of Officers Study Centre - Sri Lanka Military Academy, Chief Instructor of Officers Study Centre - Sri Lanka Military Academy, General Staff Officer 1 (Joint Planning and Force Development Cell), Office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Commanding Officer of 9th Field Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, Deputy Chief Military Personal Officer - U1 Branch, Force Headquarters of United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Directing Staff of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Colonel (General Staff) of Headquarters 51 Infantry Division, Colonel (General Staff) of Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Head of the Training Team of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Brigade Commander of 543 Infantry Brigade, Director of Directorate of Psychological Operations, Commander of Plant Engineer Brigade, Deputy Commandant of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Director of Directorate of Research Concept & Doctrine and Director General of Directorate of Research Concept & Doctrine.

He has followed many local and foreign courses during his military career, such as Artillery Observation Course, Mine Action Management Course, Chemical Biological Radiology and Nuclear Response Basic Course, Army Command and Staff Course, Young Officers Course - India, Senior Command Course - India, Humanitarian Demining Training Course - Pakistan, Command and Staff College Course - Pakistan, Bomb Disposal Course - Pakistan.

The Senior Officer has also followed a number of higher educational and non-military courses, such as Master of Business Studies at the University of Colombo, Master of Science (Art and Science of Warfare) at the University of Balochistan, Pakistan, Bachelor of Arts (Defence Studies) Degree at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Post Graduate Diploma in Management at the Open University of Sri Lanka, Diploma in Senior Level Defence Management at the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, India.
