Commander in Mullaittivu Impressed with Keppapulavu Housing Project Undertaken by Army

“The international community, as I believe, has not fathomed the degree of humanitarian assistance, being extended by Army troops in the North and East to provide relief to all sectors of people in the war-affected Mullaittivu and elsewhere, which is regrettable. Our dedication and commitment to build 165 new houses for resettled civilians in Mullaittivu, Keppapulavu Model Village serves a real case in point,” so said the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, currently in the North during his Day 2 segment of the itinerary in Mullaittivu.

Commander of the Army with the express intention of keeping the ground troops informed of international moves against Security Forces as well as evaluating ongoing Army nation-building assignments is currently visiting those areas as a part of his routine assignments and also to extend New Year greetings.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya during his sojourn at Mullaittivu took a special interest to inspect the progress of the construction project of new houses at Keppapulavu Model Village, undertaken by Infantry troops, serving the Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT).

Under the 1st phase, the Army is to complete 50 houses before the forthcoming traditional New Year festival, out of 165 planned houses, each expected to be erected in 40 perch land plots, in close proximity to the SFHQ-MLT. Upon completion, all 165 resettled families in Keppapulavu were to be moved into these new houses, as pledged by Ministry of Resettlement and the government. It was none other than the Commander himself during a recent visit to this housing project who directed to multiply the number of troops, assigned for this project’s speedy implementation.

The visiting Commander, highly impressed with the remarkable progress, hitherto achieved by completing as many as 40 new houses in the project with funds given by the Ministry of Resettlement, thanked the 592 Brigade troops for their excellent expertise as well as free labour contribution and speedy work, to provide relief to those resettled Tamil civilians, most of who earn a living by fishing in the famous nearby Nanthikadal lagoon. Plans are afoot to hand over those 40 new houses on March 16th, 2013.

Elaborate arrangements at Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu on Tuesday (5) included a Guard of Honour and a Guard Turnout, that saluted the visiting Commander of the Army on arrival there.

In order to enlighten the visiting Army Chief of ongoing Mullaittivu-centred Army projects and other participatory roles at peripheral levels, Major General L.B.R Mark, Security Force Commander-Mullaittivu, produced an extensive presentation before the visiting Commander of the Army at the SFHQ-MLT auditorium.

Later on, the Commander in his customary troop address at SFHQ-MLT highlighted the importance of safeguarding the national interests of the country, braving all odds against her at a time the country is on the path to quick recovery and development. He also lamented on the inability of the international community to gauge the correct perspectives, regarding community roles, being carried out by the Army like the housing project at Keppapulavu, for example. (See above opening comments)

“As is the practice in any post-conflict situation in any part of the world, troops of the Sri Lanka Army are also enthusiastically engaged in nation building roles such as Reconstruction, Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Reconciliation, Reintegration, Community Roles, Economic Development, Infrastructure Building, Welfare and Housing Project, etc. Sri Lanka Army in that direction has been able to fulfill most of these roles and tasks to the best of their ability by winning hearts and minds of the beneficiaries”, the Commander underlined during his address.

As one more most-needed welfare measure, the Commander had the rare privilege of opening a new Army Base hospital at Mullaittivu where about 25 inmates can be accommodated for treatment at any given time. He cut a ribbon and opened the new medical wing. In early 2012, the Commander during a visit to Mullaittivu entertained the notion of having a separate Army Base hospital in Mullaittivu for the benefit of soldiers serving the area.

Tuesday’s (5) agenda of the Army Chief’s tour, commenced with his visit to the 68 Division Headquarters at Puthukudiyiruppu under the SFHQ-MLT earlier on the day.

During his brief stay there, the Commander addressed all ranks serving the Division and called upon all of them to dedicate more and more for the sake of nation-building as peace has now dawned.

The visiting Commander after leaving Puthukudiyiruppu moved to the 64 Division Headquarters at Oddusudan where he spoke to the troops serving the region. He took time off to mingle with all ranks present there with a view to receiving an update on their well-being. Afterwards he arrived at the SFHQ-MLT to a warm welcome of the Security Force Commander - Mullaittivu, Major General L.B.R. Mark.

Security Force Commanders Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu, senior officers of the Army Headquarters, General Officers Commanding 68 and 64 Divisions, Brigade Commanders and unit commanding officers, senior officers were in attendance during the Commander’s formal visit to Mullaittivu.

His itinerary began on Monday (4) visiting the Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) and both 66 and 65 Division Headquarters.
