Commander in Jaffna Highlights Value of Field Craft and Map Reading

The SFHQ-Jaffna-initiated Map Reading and Field Craft Competition, perhaps for the first time after the war was over had its final rounds on Saturday (20) at the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) in the presence of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake as the Chief Guest for the event.

39 Battalions, each team made up of 10 members under command to the SFHQ-J, vied in this competition and 16 teams were selected for the 2nd round of them, only two teams (i.e 4 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and 12 VIR) were qualified to enter the final fray. However, 4 VIR emerged Champions scoring the highest number of points and the Best Competitor Award went to Corporal G.H.L.K Dulip Kumara. 12 VIR team was adjudged the runner-up.

The winners received their gifts and awards from the Commander of the Army in the company of Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna.

Soon after the awarding Commander addressed the gathering and highly appreciated the event and underlined the importance of the whole exercise of map reading and the value of the Field Craft and Map Reading for troops to serve as 'capacity-based' soldiers.

This competition, designed to improve the Map Reading and Field Craft Knowledge and skills of Army personnel serving within the Jaffna peninsula is being organized for the first time. The Commander of the Army was welcomed by the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi on arrival at the venue.

Brigadier Tikiri Dissanayake, Commander, 523 Brigade delivered the welcome speech and presented a briefing on the conduct of the competition. General Officer Commanding, 52 Division, Major General Laksiri Waduge who was instrumental in organizing the event explained the concept behind this competition as the chief organizer in the SFHQ area.
