Commander in his Address to SLAVF Troops Underlines Importance of Higher Educational Standards among Members

A gathering of 528 officers and 2704 other ranks of the Army's second most formidable strength, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) on Saturday (12) morning assembled at Panagoda Army Cantonment gymnasium to listen to their Commander of the Army, Lt General Daya Ratnayake for the first time after he assumed duties as the 20th Commander.

Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Commandant, SLAVF warmly received the Commander on arrival at the premises and ushered him directly to the venue for his address to the SLAVF troops where the Commander touched on several areas of concern to them, underlining the importance of reaching high educational standards and contributing to the nation-building development projects, now in progress at island-wide level.

"In this age for 'knowledge and expertise' searching, it is of paramount importance for all of you to strive hard to reach high educational standards, like reading for the psc (passed staff college) degree at Sapugaskanda and elsewhere, overcoming all obstacles and challenges. Country as well as the world seeks more and more academically sound professional scholars and it is no different in our country too," the Commander said.

"The SLAVF since its inception has thrown its full weight behind the Army all the time and its sacrifices during the Humanitarian Operations deserve all our praise and appreciation. It is the element of 'discipline' that brings credit to any organization and the whole Army is structured on discipline as you very well know. So be determined to maintain high discipline standards at any cost and at all times. There is 'zero tolerance' to indisciplined acts, please remember. We distinguish from others because of our disciplined conduct," he reminded.

Elaborating on the Army's involvement in the series of development and nation-building tasks, Lt Gen Ratnayake, stressed the need to shoulder such responsibilities with dedication as is the case in any post-conflict scenario. "This is another challenge bestowed upon us as the most- sought service provider. The public have a great confidence in us and admire our already visible results, for example, in the field of constructions, etc. You can all be proud of such achievements as members of the Army because the dividends of our tireless commitment would greatly benefit our upcoming generations, sons and daughters of your families, "he added.

HE the President as well as the Secretary Defence is of the firm view that all three services are professionally full-fledged to take on any challenge by way of any mega development projects and that itself is an honour and proud to all of us, the Commander pointed out.

Before winding up, he also recalled the SLAVF's noble support to the Army at all times and wished it a long-life.

Major General Prasad Samarasinghe before the culmination of the day's proceedings, presented the first copy of the new SLAVF magazine 'Ranavaruna' to the Commander of the Army.

Major General Sumedha Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters-West, Major General WDLP Wickramasinghe, Deputy Commandant, SLAVF and all SLAVF senior officers were associated with the occasion.
