Commander During DSCSC Visit Unveils Memorabilia

The Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage at the invitation of the Commandant, Defence Service Command and Staff College (DSCSC) at Sapugaskanda on Thursday (23 March) visited the DSCSC in order to receive updates on its functional aspects.

The day’s Chief Guest, saluted in a Guard Turnout at the entrance to the DSCSC was welcomed afterwards by Major General B.K.G.M.L Rodrigo RSP psc IG, Commandant DSCSC. The Army Chief, together with Major General D.G.S Senarath Yapa RWP RSP ndu, Deputy Chief of Staff afterwards sat for group photographs as memories of his visit to the location.

Next, the Commander of the Army was invited to unveil an unserviceable T-55 Main Battle Tank (MBT) and an unserviceable 130 mm Gun which have been of ornamental and memorable value to the DSCSC compound. The day’s Chief Guest uncovered separate plaques and declared those memorabilia in the compound open to the Student Officers.

The unserviceable T-55 MBT was extensively used in combat during ‘Sathjaya’ and ‘Jayasikurui’ Operations in 1996 and 1997 for the campaign against LTTE terrorism before it was classified unserviceable. The unserviceable 130 mm Gun was used in the North and East during counter terrorist operations before May 2009.

Subsequently, the Commander of the Army together with the Commandant, DSCSC was invited to have a close look at Student Officers' syndicate rooms, accommodations of local and foreign undergraduates, examination halls, mess halls and other facilities.

Major General B.K.G.M.L Rodrigo RSP psc IG, Commandant, DSCSC afterwards presented a special appreciative memento to the Commander of the Army as a token of memory of his visit to the premises. The gesture was reciprocated.

Before the Army Chief’s exit, he made a complimentary note in the DSCSC Visitors’ Book.

Major General D.G.S Senarath Yapa RWP RSP ndu, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General D.B.S.N Bothota RWP RSP VSV USP psc, Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna, Major General M.K Jayawardene RSP USP ndu, Chief Field Engineer, Major General J.A.R.S.K Jayasekara USP psc, Director General, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Brigadier W.P Kariyawasam, Armour Brigade Commander, Brigadier S.P Malwarage RSP USP IG, Artillery Brigade Commander and Senior Officers were associated with the Commander’s visit to the location.

The DSCSC at Sapugaskanda is the highest seat of military learning for middle-grade officers of the Tri Forces and was established with the aim of developing the professional knowledge and understanding of selected Student Officers from the Three-services, Sri Lanka Police, friendly foreign countries and other Public Institutions in order to prepare them for appointments on Command and on Staff whilst imparting knowledge on government procedures and other public sectors.
