Commander in Diyatalawa Opens New Squash Court & Joins Awarding Ceremony

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) this evening (18) opened the newly-constructed Squash Court at Diyatalawa Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) complex and joined the prize-giving ceremony of the Inter Regiment Squash Tournament-2020 as the Chief Guest.

Together with Brigadier Pradeep Gunawardena, Chairman Sri Lanka Army Squash Committee, Major General Prabhath Dematanpitiya, Chief of Staff, Major General Duminda Sirinaga, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Dhammika Jayasinghe Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Brigadier Chrishantha Gnanarathna Commandant, SLMA welcomed the visiting Commander of the Army on arrival.

At first, the Chief Guest unveiled a plaque and warmed the 17 Corps of Engineer Services (CES) troops-built new four-walled Squash Court, erected in keeping with recognized specifications to match international standards.

This year's preliminary matches of the Inter Regiment Squash Tournament were concurrently conducted at Panagoda and Mattegoda Army Squash Courts and the finals were held at Diyatalawa with 100 plus sportsmen and women representing 16 Army Regiments, prior to the opening of the new Court.

The day's Chief Guest joined the maiden Squash game by spinning the first rally against his partner, symbolizing the inauguration of the new Court. Minutes after, he was invited to distributed prizes among the winners in the tournament and congratulated both men and women who participated in the finals.

Towards the end of the inauguration, he spoke to the Media and urged the public to take special care of their movements during the forthcoming festive season and said the Sri Lanka Army as the biggest organization has now erected 3 Squash courts in order to improve it to international standards by enabling Army sportsmen to compete against any rival sportsman in Squash.
