Commander Congratulates Army Boxing Champions

Sri Lanka Army Boxers who after absence of 6 years clinched the overall championship in the National Boxing Tournament - 2015, held during March 16 - 20 at Colombo Torrington Stadium, Ministry of Sports securing Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, came in for praise of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Chrishanthe De Silva during a brief meeting at the Army Headquarters.

The winners, led by Major General G.R.H Dias, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Boxing Committee  were summoned to the Army Headquarters where each and everyone was introduced to the Army Chief before he heaped praise on their collective achievements, beating more than 150 leading boxers in the tournament.

Their Wednesday’s meeting with the Commander inspired them as the Commander closely inquired into their gains and assured them further support in the future.

Male boxers in the Army won the Championship in five weight categories, runners-up slot in four weight categories and seven Bronze medals in the second runners-up category displaying unmatched achievements during the tournament.

In addition, the Army boxing team was adjudged the ‘Most Successful Club of the Year’ in the tournament.

Similarly, woman boxers in the Army Women’s Boxers Team bagged the runners-up trophy for two weight categories, out of 6 woman boxers who vied under four weight categories.

A total of 156 boxers representing 16 sports clubs across the country competed in the tournament, organized by Sri Lanka Association of Novice Boxers.
