Chief Of Staff Flags Off 'Army Road Race - 2022'

Major General Jagath Kodithuwakku, Chief of Staff this morning (2) as the Chief Guest at the entrance to the Army HQ symbolized the start of the annual 'Army Road Race - 2022', joined by 147 participants of 15 Regiments of the Army.

The marathon race, a popular feature in the calendar of Army sports covering about 22 km from Battaramulla ended at the Panagoda Army Cantonment amidst applause.

The Sri Lanka Army Athletic Committee, chaired by Major General Sujeewa Senerath Yapa, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) was instrumental in arranging the event, that started off at 6.00 a.m. comprised of 15 women sprinters and ran via Diyatha Uyana, Battaramulla, Malabe, Athurugiriya, Habarakada, along the High Level road up to the Panagoda Army cantonment before the race ended near the Army Gymnasium at Panagoda.

Major General Jagath Kodithuwakku, Brigadier Vijitha Hettiatachchi, Secretary Army Athletic Committee and several other Senior Officers were at the finish to receive the racers along with a crowd of sports enthusiasts.

The Chief of Staff was afterwards invited to award medals and trophies to achievers in the road race, together with the Secretary Army Athletic Committee.

The Army Road Race Championship, started in 1951 has to-date produced many national and international level Army marathon runners to the country. The Army Road Race, held on par with international standards is generally observed by a panel of judges of national and international recognition, following arrangements, made by the Army Athletic Committee.

Overall Championship - (Men’s Category) - Sri Lanka Army Service Corps

Overall Championship - (Women’s Category) - Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps A Team.

First Place - Bombardier K Sammugeshwaram (SLA)

Second Place - Corporal PKSMS Gunasekara (SLSR)

Third Place - Private KKL Premod (SLLI)

Women’s Category

First Place - Private HMWPW Herath (SLAWC)

Second Place - Private HMP Herath (SLAGSC)

Third Place - Lance Corporal ASN Bandara (SLAWC)
