MANNAR: TWENTY-TWO (22) Tiger terrorists are now confirmed killed in the GIANT TANK area, MANNAR clashes that went on till late Thursday (01) afternoon after troops were able to capture many of their bunker lines in the area.
Ensuing gun battles that sparked off this morning (01) when terrorists after exit from their bunkers began firing on the troops while simultaneously trying to infiltrate cleared areas.
Troops responding to the LTTE violence went on counter- attacking them and smashing their bunkers that were used as launching pads. The fire-fight continued for more than seven hours and deprived the Army of two valiant soldiers who were defending their positions. Twelve soldiers sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.
In the first phase of the fight eight LTTE dead bodies were collected by the troops. Fourteen more Tigers were confirmed killed in the fight according to monitored LTTE transmissions.
The fire-fight brought all those bunker lines and surrounding areas under the control of brave soldiers of the Army as many Tiger cadres began taking to their heels in the face of advancing troops. Terrorists left the areas without either collecting their casualties.
As this edition went to Press, troops are in full control of the captured bunker areas after driving away terrorists. (Ref previous Situation Reports of the day)
