Bogaswewa Civilians Assured Better Living Conditions


Distribution of wheelchairs and pairs of crutches, push bicycles, coconut seedlings, fishing nets, mosquito nets, cement bags, corrugated tin sheets, opening of nursing quarters and two new Buddhist places of worship, foundation stone-laying for community projects, inauguration of electrification schemes and a few other social development schemes, meant for Bogaswewa resettled people in Vavuniya, got underway throughout Monday (11) with Hon Namal Rajapaksa, (MP) who is also the Chairman, ‘Tharunyata Hetak’ attending them as the Chief Guest.

With the objective of raising living standards of these resettled people in remote Bogaswewa region, Department of Social Services, Department of Education, Department of Health, Electricity Board, Department of Fisheries and a few other state agencies jointly organized the series of those programmes in the area.

The day’s itinerary started after the Parliamentarian arrived at 56 Division Headquarters in Vavuniya where he was given a briefing on different Army projects before a visit to the Kokeliya ‘Ranaviru Piyasa’ Housing Scheme was made by him. Later on, the visiting Parliamentarian gave away a stock of wheelchairs and pairs of crutches to needy civilians during a brief ceremony, organized by Department of Social Services at Mahakachchikuddiya Buddhist temple.

On the same occasion, two resettled villages in the area were renamed as Namalgama and Nandimithragama by the visiting MP and the Chief Guest soon after renaming made offerings to the Buddha statues at Namalgama Rajamaha Viharaya and Sandasiri Rajamaha Viharaya.

A few minutes later, Mr Rajapaksa laid the foundation stones for construction of a new school building to the students at Bogaswewa village and a new public/community health service centre in the area. Inaugural sod-cutting for erection of power poles for an electrification scheme, too took place around the same time.

During a Janahamuwa that followed in Bogaswewa area afterwards, Mr Namal Rajapaksa distributed 300 push bicycles, 3500 coconut seedlings, 200 fishing nets, 200 mosquito nets, cement bags, roofing sheets and other essentials among the needy in the area after a brief oration.

As the final segment of the day’s programme, the visiting Parliamentarian unveiled a plaque and opened the newly-built nursing quarters at Welioya Sampathnuwara.

Ven Etambagaskada Kalyanatissa Nayake Thero, Hon Shehan Semasinghe (MP), Mr Bandula Harishchandra, District Secretary for Vavuniya, Mr S.B Diwarthne, Secretary Presidential Task Force, Mr Gotabaya Jayaratne, Secretary, Ministry of Education, Major General Boniface Perera, Security Force Commander - Wanni, Senior Police Officers, General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Senior Officers and a large gathering of civilians were associated with the day’s events.
