Artillery Athletes Carry Away Championship

COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest and Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch recently witnessed the final events of the Sri Army Inter Regimental Athletic Meet. 

The sports meets took place at the Sugathadasa Stadium last Thursday (10) with the participation of a large group of sports enthusiasts. 

Over 1500 male and female athletes representing 24 Army Regiments vied for the Championship which was finally secured by the Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA). Participants, during the sports meet held for three days established five new records which had earlier been made by Army athletes. The 480 weight class male championship was secured by Sri Lanka Artillery Corps Team. 

Sri Lanka Army Service Corps and Sri Lanka Light Infantry were respectively adjudged the first and second runners-up of the Meet organized by Sri Lanka Army Athletic Committee under the close supervision of its President Major General K.A.D.A. Karunasekara.

The event concluded with a colourful cultural feat and display of fireworks in the evening. Trophies and certificates to the winners were given away by Commander and Mrs. Jayasuriya. Chief of Staff Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe and a large number of Senior Officers attended the event.     

A large crowd of distinguished local and foreign guests, Other Ranks and their family members witnessed the meet.
