Army Won National Taekwondo Championship for the Ninth Consecutive Year Grabbing 9 Gold Medals

Sri Lanka Army Taekwondo players won the Championship for the ninth consecutive year in the Army history in National Taekwondo Championship held at Sugathadasa stadium from 5 - 6 March 2012. The Army won nine Gold Medals, four Silver Medals and thirteen Bronze Medals from both men and women categories. 29 players participated for the men’s category while 9 players participated for the women’s category.

Staff Sergeant R.M.P.R. Rajapaksa (Heavy weight category), Corporal B.A.P.S.W. Dayaratne (Bantam weight category), Corporal D.S. Sayakkara (Fly weight category), Corporal R.M.W. Gunasekara (Welter weight category), Private H.P.M.C.T. Senaratne (Middle weight category), Private T.B.R.A. Bandara (Fin weight category) and Private A.P.D. Madhusanka (Light weight category) won Gold Medals while Private E.G.K.P.M. Karunaratne (Bantam weight category) secured a Silver Medal, Lance Corporal I.W.K. Weerasinghe (Shin weight category), Lance Corporal R.M.C.S. Navaratne (Middle weight category), Gunner W.P. Thilina Kumara (Feather weight category), Private R.M.S.K. Rathnayake (Fly weight category), Private K.A.N.H. Kularatne (Light weight category), Private W.B.M.D.H.K. Weerasekara (Welter weight category), Private M.G.C.I.P. Kumara (Middle weight category), Private N.L.S. Udishan (Heavy weight category) and Private H.K.P. Sanjeewa (Heavy weight category) won Bronze Medals in men’s category.

Corporal P.M.A.G. Sandamali (Feather weight category) and Private K.A.J. Karunaratne (Middle weight category) won Gold Medals while Private K.N. Kumari (Fly weight category), Private H.A.N. Hemakumari (Bantam weight category) and Private K.D. Malkanthi (Shin weight category) secured Silver Medals and Corporal N.D. Saputhanthri (Fly weight category), Private R.M.M.K. Bandara (Bantam weight category), Private T.K.C.T. Karunanayake (Light weight category) and Private R.M.P.I. Rajapaksa (Light weight category) won Bronze Medals in women’s category.

Seventeen sports clubs including Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Police Special Task Force participated in the event and the Sri Lanka Army became overall Champions by scoring 88 points.

The Korean Ambassador for Sri Lanka Mr John Moon Choi, the Korean coach and the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Association graced the occasion and gave away the Trophies.
