Army Women Soldiers Join International Women’s Day Celebration, Organized by ASVU

The Sri Lanka Army in association with the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) at the forefront of welfare reliefs this morning (8) added due recognition to the Army women who sweat for the defence of the motherland and all women in general during a special ‘International Women’s Day’ project, themed ‘Senehase Kedella’ at Panagoda Army Cantonment indoor stadium.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army at the invitation of Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit graced the commemorative event as the Chief Guest, together with a few Senior Officers. The Chief Guest was warmly received on arrival by Major General Kithsiri Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces - West. The day’s programme was coloured by ‘TV Derana’ presenting a thematic musical flavour in order to motivate the gathering where the pride of feminism and their importance to society was highlighted.

The lighting of the traditional oil lamp and the observance of a two-minute silence in memory of all fallen War Heroes set the stage ready for the day’s climax, free award of financial grants for medical, housing and other needs of 6 woman soldiers and the spouse of a deceased Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police soldier to the value of Rs 1.2 m in total. A gathering of about 350 Lady Officers and woman Other Ranks joined the occasion and enjoyed the aesthetic flavour of the whole programme, musically interpreted by the reputed lyrics writer and musician, Mr Dammika Bandara.

Around the same time, the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps - Seva Vanitha Unit considering the needs of patients gifted a stock of essentials to the value of Rs 7 lakhs for use of the patients, to be admitted to the Pallekele Army Hospital, now receiving final touches. Mrs Eranga Hewawasam, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps - Seva Vanitha Unit on behalf of its members gifted those essentials symbolically to Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU on the same occasion for onward delivery.

Meanwhile, Mrs Sujeewa Nelson towards the end of the day’s programme showing gratitude for the success of the project awarded mementos to the officials and crew members of the ‘TV Derana’ who provided live coverage.

At the end of the programme, all attendees were given a gift pack as a token of memory of the day. ‘Lia Private Limited’ meanwhile added variety to the occasion by conducting a beauty culture workshop at the same location on account of the International Women’s Day.

Senior Officers, including Major General Kithsiri Liayanage, Commander Security Forces - West, Brigadier Thushara Balasooriya, Brigadier Coordination Army Seva Vanitha Unit, Chairpersons and Senior members of the Army Seva Vanitha Units joined the day’s programme at Panagoda Army Indoor Stadium.
