Army Women Have Their First 'Dinner Night' with Commander as Chief Guest

Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC), raised exactly 32 years ago as a supporting battalion made history Tuesday (22) evening after holding its first-ever ‘Dinner Night’ at Colombo Galadari Hotel on par with other Regiments in the Army.

The maiden SLAWC ‘Dinner Night’ that coincides with SLAWC’s 14th Anniversary saw the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya grace the occasion as the Chief Guest since the event itself would add a new chapter to the history of Army Women’s Corps.

SLAWC, now with 2 regular battalions and 5 volunteer battalions boasts a strength of 210 officers and 3750 other ranks who are performing multiple service roles hand in hand with their male counterparts across the country. To-date, 25 woman soldiers while defending the country had made the supreme sacrifice during humanitarian operations.   

Brigadier K. W. Edema, Colonel of the Regiment received the Chief Guest on arrival at the hotel premises and conducted him and other distinguished guests to the banquet hall.             

Brigadier Edema in his brief welcome address to the occasion commended the SLAWC for its commendable standards and stressed the need to produce positive and efficient leaders at all levels in the Army.

Major General D. R. A. B. Jayatillake, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, SLAWC Centre Commandant, Commanding Officers and several other senior officers attended the ‘Dinner Night’.
