Army Women Deminers Showcase Skills Before UN Delegates

The United Nations (UN) Assessment and Advisory Visit (AAV) team, currently in Sri Lanka in order to evaluate the Operational Readiness Preparations for an additional ‘Combat Convoy Company B-1’ (CCC) to serve in the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) as part of their itinerary during stay here arrived at the Engineers' Division in Mattegoda on Wednesday (22).

Major General M.K Jayawardena, Chief Field Engineer and Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Engineers welcomed the UN delegation, comprised of Mr James Victor De Rcole, Colonel Lawrence Kapina, Lieutenant Colonel Rajeev, Mr Mark Flood and Mr Satvinder Singh Paul on arrival.

03 Lady Officers and 43 women soldiers who have undergone comprehensive de-mining training afterwards showcased their talents and skills in front of the UN delegation assuring them of their productive employability on a par with their male counterparts.

The Field Engineering Basic Module and Humanitarian Demining Course for Sri Lanka Army women soldiers commenced last year at the Vavuniya-based Field Engineer Brigade and 10 Sri Lanka Engineers camp, located in Mailaddy, Jaffna. The UN AAV team earlier visited several Army formations and received updates.

Major General Lanka Amarapala, General Officer Commanding, Engineers' Division, Major General Asanga Perera, Director General Directorate of Overseas Operations, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks were associated with the event.
