Army Weight-Lifting Champions (Men) Produce New Sri Lankan Record

Sri Lanka Army weight-lifting team (men) emerged the overall champions and produced a new Sri Lankan record in the 56 kg weight category during the recent (Feb 09-10) National Weight-Lifting Tournament - 2012 (men and women) at Polonnaruwa Royal College auditorium. This was the 46th Weight-Lifting Championship Tournament.

Corporal C.S.S. Wijesooriya of 2nd Battalion Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps secured a Gold in the tournament and produced a new Sri Lankan record after lifting 106 kg (snatch technique) in the 56 kg category.

In the same tournament Lance Corporal A.A.C Athukorala of 18th Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard claimed a Gold in 69 kg category, Lance Corporal K.T.C Abeykoon of 5th Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard, a Gold in 94 kg category, Private D.G.N Sisira Kumara of 5th Battalion Gajaba Regiment, a Silver in 69 kg category, Lance Bombardier J.G.I.A Bandara of 6th Battalion Sri Lanka Artillery, a Silver in 85 kg category, Corporal A.N.S Silva of 7th Battalion Engineer Service Regiment, a Silver in 105+ kg category, Sergeant J.A.S.K Jayakody of 9th Commando Regiment, a Bronze in 77 kg category and Gunner A.P.S Abeywickrema of 15th Battalion Sri Lanka Artillery, a Bronze in 105 kg category, thus emerging as the overall champions in the tournament after securing 3 Golds, 3 Silvers and 2 Bronze medals in total.

In the women’s events, Private M.A.S Sarojini of 4th Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps, Private S.R.S Kumari of 6th Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps and Private I.A Kaluthanthri of 6th Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps won Silver medals respectively in 69 kg, 58 kg and 75 kg.
