Army Volleyball Players in Central Asian Beach Volleyball Competition Emerge Runners-up

The Sri Lanka Army Volleyball team, taking part in the Central Asian Beach Volleyball Competition, organized by the Asian Central Zone Volleyball Federation emerged the runners-up in the Beach Volleyball Tournament, held on the Negombo beach patch during 18 - 20 February.

9 Volleyball teams of five countries in Central Asia including Sri Lanka vied in the three-day tournament where the Army Volleyball Team defeated all the national teams of Iran, Pakistan, Maldives and Uzbekistan in the preliminary rounds to qualify for the finals with the Iranian team.

In the final match, the Iranian team emerged victorious pushing the Army team to be the runners-up in the tournament after a close tussle against their rivals in the Iranian team.

Private S.S.M Frenando and Private M.H.A.S Dharmapala of 2 (v) Sri Lanka Army Service Corps represented the Sri Lanka Army team in the tournament.

The final match was watched by a gathering of sport-lovers, including, Major General Mahesh Abeyrathne, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Volleyball Committee, Senior Vice President of Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, several Officers and Other Ranks.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army provided all encouragement and facilities for Army Beach volleyball players by giving necessary instructions.
