Residents in 'Vikumpura' model village in Mannar, a habitation, founded by the Commander of the Army some years ago when he was serving the Wanni region as the Commander of the 542 Infantry Brigade were recently given free dry rations, prepared and sponsored by All Ranks serving the Brigade and its under command units in an attempt to ease their economic burdens.
Organized collectively, the General Officer Commanding, 54 Infantry Division, Major General G.W.A Seneviratne USP psc took the initiative in this regard and took 25 dry ration packs to their doorsteps and handed them after the Grama Seva official recommended the most deserving beneficiaries.
Many family members in Vikumpura houses are without proper source of income and make their earnings through casual labour work and cultivating vegetables, paddy, etc. Troops considering the humanitarian aspect of those civilians voluntarily and generously offered their contribution to this civil-military co-operation project. Each pack worth about Rs 5000/=contained dry rations, dry fish, cereals, tinned food, etc.
Colonel R.R.M.P.N.B Bambaradeniya RWP RSP USP psc, Commander 542 Infantry Brigade, Civil affairs Officer of the 542 Infantry Brigade, Commanding Officer of 4 Gajaba Regiment, Commanding Officer of 8 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Commanding Officer 15 Gemunu Watch and troops of the 8 Vijayabahu Regiment also joined the distribution programme.
