Army Troops Lead by Example Constructing More Than 3044 Homes for the Homeless

Since 2009, Sri Lanka has witnessed a heartwarming initiative where the Army troops have taken on the responsibility of constructing homes for the homeless. This remarkable undertaking has not only provided shelter to those in dire need but has also displayed the Army's commitment to serving the community and fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among its citizens.

To-date, the Army has successfully built a total of 3044 houses across the country while 22 more houses are currently under construction for the benefit of deserving poor people across the country.

The roots of this national-conscious initiative can be traced back to the end of the civil conflict in Sri Lanka in 2009. With peace restored, the country faced the immense challenge of resettling thousands of displaced families who had lost their homes during the conflict. In response to this pressing need, the Sri Lanka Army played a proactive role in providing houses for the needy in close coordination with respective state officials (Grama Seva Officials).

All Security Force Headquarters, including those in Jaffna, Wanni, Mullaittivu, East, Central, and West, along with Regimental Centres, have been actively engaged in the construction of houses for needy families. This widespread participation illustrates the extent to which the Army has embraced its role as a force for well-being of the community. Beyond just constructing houses, it has provided a lifeline to countless homeless families, offering them a chance to rebuild their lives and regain their dignity. These homes are not just bricks and walls but they are symbols of hope and resilience, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, there are people who are willing to extend a helping hand.

Moreover, the Army's involvement in this humanitarian endeavor has fostered a sense of unity and camaraderie among the citizens of Sri Lanka. It has shown that the armed forces are not just defenders of the nation but also active participants in nation-building and community development. This initiative has brought the people of Sri Lanka closer together, reinforcing the idea that, as a nation, they can overcome any challenge when they stand united.

The construction of homes for the homeless by the Sri Lanka Army since 2009 is a testament to the power of compassion, solidarity, and community service. By providing shelter to those in need and actively participating in nation-building, the Army has not only improved the lives of countless individuals but has also strengthened the bonds that hold the nation together. This inspiring initiative serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when a nation's armed forces are committed to the well-being of their citizens.
