On information received from military intelligence troops, 24 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops of 121 Brigade and 12 Division Tuesday evening (29) raided two Cannabis (Ganja) cultivations in the general area of Hambegamuwa area in Thanamalwila and destroyed the crops.
The illegal crop cultivation, grown in about 40 perches of land has been done secretly inside jungle areas to the value of about Rs 10 m. Policemen also visited the location after its detection was intimated to them. Troops pulled out all plants and destroyed the bulk of it under supervision of the Police.
The Tanamalwila Police are conducting investigations and pursuing necessary action. Troops throwing their full weight behind the government's national project to rid the country of narcotics and drugs are currently engaged in the arrest of culprits and recover stocks of narcotics and drugs at the request of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army & Head, NOCPCO.
On the guidelines given by the Commander Security Forces-Central, General Officer Commanding, 12 Division, and 121 Brigade Commander instructed his troops to swoop on this illegal cultivation.
121 Brigade Commander closely monitored the clearing operation.
