Army Troops Busy Doing Flood Relief Work

Sri Lanka Army rising to the occasion swiftly jumped into action across the country where heavy rains are causing destruction and havoc including the North and East.

Hundreds of troops with their all-time preparedness under the directions of the Commander of the Army and respective field commanders are currently engaged in immediate repair and relief work in Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaittivu, Iranamadu, Batticaloa, Valachchena, Pothuvil and several other areas.

Mannar in the past few days experienced windy and torrential rains and inundated the areas after damaging road infrastructure, drain systems and sewage canals which prompted troops of the 25 Gemunu Watch (GW) to respond to the emergency.

They jointly cleaned blocked drain systems, stacked sand bags where necessary and made stagnated flood water to recede using backhoes, bulldozers and other machinery. A large section of affected populace was also given away free meal packets for three days after food was cooked by the Army troops serving the 543 Brigade area.

Meanwhile, troops in Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are busy taking preventive measures against any breach of major dams in large reservoirs, lakes and other canals, etc as almost all such places have now either reached spilling levels or are by now spilling, forcing the people to move to safer areas.

Army troops in coordination with District Secretaries and other authorities have already put a contingency plan in some of those vulnerable areas.
