ARMY TROOPS BUSY ATTENDING TO MOST NEEDED REPAIRS & CONSTRUCTIONS IN SCHOOLS

Multitasking Army troops of the Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), Corps of Engineer Services (CES), 9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and 18 Gemunu Watch (GW) who swiftly acted upon the directions of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, have undertaken several multi-faceted development-oriented community projects in schools and other places during past few days.

People, principals, teachers, students and parents who interacted with HE the President during his most recent visits to respective areas directly sought his intervention for renovation of school playgrounds, stadiums, roadways, buildings, etc which have remained unattended.

Fully confident of recognized Army skills, HE the President has tasked the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva to deliver the needs at the earliest.

Accordingly, a contingent of 60 Army personnel of 9 SLSR, CES and Sri Lanka Engineers Training School troops at short notice proceeded to Thanamalwila National College premises after students and teachers informed the visiting President of the dilapidated status quo of the entry road to the college, by roads and the assembly ground. Simultaneously, 10 CES troops are busy repairing the school auditorium at Thanamalwila National College at the request of school authorities as of now.

Similarly, another group of soldiers undertook the renovation of unattended Dematapandura tank with its 350m long bund after instructions reached them. 11 SLE troops are currently clearing and renovating the entire tank that covers about 7 acres and supplies water to nearly 35 acres of cultivation.

18 GW and CES troops of the 121 Brigade meanwhile have begun renovation of the playground at Moneragala Madulla Maha Vidyalaya after a similar request was referred to the visiting President.

On Sunday (2), troops of the Corps of Engineer Services of the 12 Division completed the roof repairs at Middeniya Kanishta Vidayalaya after instructions were received from the Army Headquarters.

In addition, troops of 11 SLE and 12 SLE are currently effecting repairs to the Ayagama-Kalawana road and Neluwa-Lankagama road while clearing about 150m in length and attending to roadside clearing, necessary earth filling, excavations and compaction.

Meanwhile, 5 Field Sri Lanka Engineers troops are presently carrying out road repairs between Kolawenigama and Lankagama by widening both sides of the road and continuing necessary roadside clearing, earth filling and excavations and compaction. By Tuesday (4), a road patch of about 40 m has been refilled with soil.

Earlier, 6 Field Sri Lanka Engineers, 12 Field Sri Lanka Engineers troops and 11 Field Sri Lanka Engineers troops in response to the Presidential directive to the Army Chief, commenced playground and stadium development projects at Hanguranketha Poramadulla Central College and plans are afoot to construct a flyover bridge between the playground and the school premises.

In the meantime, renovation work of the playground at Deraniyagala Siri Saman National School which began on 19 July 2020 was completed and officially vested in the school on Tuesday (4).

In another mega project, 11 Field Sri Lanka Engineers troops are constructing the new sports stadium and its pavilion at Dummalasuriya J.R Jayawardena Central College as of now.
