Army Tree Planting Drive Commenced From Panagoda


Sri Lanka Army, throwing its full weight behind the national tree planting campaign, ‘Deyata Sevana’ which began on Tuesday (15) at Battaramulla, launched a similar project across island-wide field formations after an inaugural ceremony, held at Panagoda Army Temple (Sri Bodhirajaramaya) premises.

On the instructions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, the Security Forces Headquarters, South (SFHQ-S), organized the tree planting campaign with Major General R.M.D Ratnayake, Chief of Staff, attending the inauguration as the Chief Guest.

Major General Ratnayake, synchronizing with the auspicious minute at Battaramulla national ceremony planted a Naa sapling in the temple premises and formally kicked off the Army tree planting programme.

Saplings of 500 coconut, 500 arecanut and another 500 saplings of jak, teak, naa, hora, beraliya, bread fruit, mahogany, nedun and coffee were planted simultaneously at Panagoda Army Cantonment compound, Kendalanda officers’ residential complex, all Regimental Headquarters premises, Thunnana Army farm complex and the Army temple premises during the forenoon on Tuesday (15). Major General S.R Manawaduge, Commander, SFHQ-S received the Chief Guest on arrival.  

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, taking an exceptional interest in the national cause appointed separate senior officers to coordinate the Army tree planting programme, through which a total of 54,209 saplings of coconut, mee, kumbuk, margosa, teak, bamboo, guava, king coconut, mango, jak, lemon, cashew, kottamba, mahogany, orange, wood-apple, pihimbiya, ehela, halmilla, mara, ebony, domba, nedun, kapu, hora, naa, kong, milla, weera, arecanut, palmyrah, palu, avocado, breadfruit, tamarind, beli, kithul, bulu, nelli, madatiya, rathkaravu, gammalu, velan, kobonila, kolong, mekumbuk, pomegranate, koorimara, jambu and several other species of herbal plants, were planted across the country in all field formations on Tuesday (15).
