Army Offers Its Technical Expertise to Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel

Sri Lanka Army, in a joint project with the Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the national mobile service provider, has agreed to employ 68 of its personnel in the sphere of Base Transceiver Station (BTS), Transmission and Power & Civil for further development of their telecom network.

In response to a request, submitted by the Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, seeking professional expertise and assistance of the Army personnel for expansion of their network project, the Chief Signal Officer’s Headquarters was directed to provide such Army expertise service on payment basis to the Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel.

Accordingly, Major General R.A Kaduwela, Chief Signal Officer, Sri Lanka Army made 68 Army personnel to undergo comprehensive training in BTS and transmission equipment installation in mobile networks for a period of 2 -3 weeks before they were posted as Technical Officer and Rigger / Technicians in specific areas of professional expertise.

After the formal completion of training for those 68 personnel under Mobitel engineers, Major General Rohan Kaduwela on behalf of the Army signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mr Lalith De Silva, Chief Executive Officer, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel for such mobilization on 17 January 2013 during a brief ceremony.

Major General Kaduwela while thanking the Commander of the Army for facilitating the Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel request maintained that this project of national importance would open up new vistas of knowledge on technological advancement and different aspects among both officers and soldiers in the Army.

Mr Lalith De Silva, Chief Executive Officer, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel opined that these brave Army men would soon become a part of the Mobitel family as the driving force behind making the new technological development a reality soon as the foremost in the telecom industry and would serve a fruitful partnership with the Army during our march to make Sri Lanka the ‘Wonder of Asia’.
