Army Labour Constructs New School Building in Wanni


The new school building, constructed by Army troops at Vavuniya, Kovilpulayankulam Muttamal Vidyalaya with the funds made available by Quatar based ‘Helping the Need in the North’ organization was ceremonially opened and formally handed over to the school authorities during a brief ceremony on Monday (29).

The new building that houses a computer section, principal’s office and four class rooms was opened by Major General A.K.S Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni in the company of the sponsors, Mr Kumudu De Fonseka, Mrs Fonseka of the ‘Helping the Need in the North’ organization, Brigadier A. Kariyakarawana, General Officer Commanding, 61 Division, Brigadier K.G.D Perera, 611 Brigade Commander, Lieutenant Colonel K.N.D Karunapala, Commanding Officer, 25 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), Provincial Director of Education Mr Sivapala Sundaram, Principal at Kovilpulayankulam Muttamal Vidyalaya Ms P. Kamaleshwari and several other invitees.

The school with one cadjan-thatched construction was founded in 1959 with 15 students attending classes from Year 1 to Year 5 and by 1998 there had been 460 students learning in the school, which was renamed afterwards as Kovilpulayankulam Muttamal Vidyalaya. Since the year 2000, the school conducts classes for Advanced Level students and is to be run with 1125 children, absorbed from peripheral rural schools.      

The opening ceremony was addressed by Major General A.K.S Perera as Chief Guest.
