A closely contested Kabaddi encounter in the Army at the last moment of the tussle recorded victory to the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) against its equally competent Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) rivals on Wednesday (16) evening.

Kabaddi, the popular South Asian sport which has now made its niche in the Army calendar of sports too, saw the Army had its Inter Regiment Tournament finals on Wednesday (16) at Maharagama Youth Council Indoor Auditorium.

Wednesday’s finals were witnessed by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Chairman, Army Kabaddi Committee.

Until the final moment, the SLAC players posed a tireless challenge to their rivals but thinly missed the victory to the surprise of the gathering.  All the players in both teams received greetings from the Commander of the Army before their finals commenced. Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) emerged the 2nd runners-up.

In the meantime, Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) and Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) and Sri Lanka National Guards (SLNG) Kabaddi players competed under the 'A' Division and saw ESR emerged winners. The 2nd and 3rd places went to MIR and SLNG respectively.

The ‘B’ Division competition produced Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) group as champions. Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) and Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) became runners-up.

A separate exhibition match of Woman Kabaddi players at the start of the final segment of the day’s event, added colour and enthusiasm to the occasion. 3 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (3 SLAWC) 4 SLAWC and 6 SLAWC carried away trophies for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Trooper D. G. G. Madushanka of SLAC was adjudged the Best Defender in the tournament while Lance Corporal A. G.  Siriwardane of SLLI became the Best Attacker.
