Army Headquarters Marks Sinhala-Hindu New Year With a Fun-making Traditional New Year Festival

Festival atmosphere in the country on account of the Sinhala-Hindu New Year prevailed in the Moors grounds throughout Tuesday (19) morning when officers and soldiers serving at Army Headquarters got together to mark the occasion by holding a fun-making New Year festival.   

Commander of the Army Lieutinant General Jagath Jayasuriya took time off to attend the festival as Chief Guest.

The hoisting of the National and Army flags by the Commander and the Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force respectively signalled the official commencement of the event. President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya and senior members of the SVAB, All senior officers at the Army Headquarters other ranks and civil staff members serving the Army headquarters participated in the occasion.

Cadjan weaving, bun eating, pillow-fights, Raban playing, grease pole climbing, selection of the Princes of the New Year ‘Awurudu Kumari’, eye-placing on the Elephant, lime balancing, slow cycle-peddling, tug of war, fancy dress parade and a number of  other traditional and fun-making games dominated the occasion.

At the end of the festival, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs. Jayasuriya gave away gifts and trophies for winners in different competitions. A buffet lunch concluded the day’s agenda with the participation of the Commander of the Army, Officers and all Ranks.
