Army Grooms Interest for Chess Playing among Jaffna Students

A workshop for Chess training, conducted by a well-qualified instructor team of the Sri Lanka Army Chess Committee, headed by Head coach, Mr Sanjula Ravinath in Tamil language for 62 students from 10 schools in Jaffna drew to a close on Sunday (13) after a certificate-awarding ceremony.

Commanders of 511 and 513 Brigades were instrumental in organizing the event as per guidelines given by Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe, General Officer Commanding, 51 Division. The workshop was held under the guidance of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Army Chess Committee with the assistance of Major General Swarna Bothota, Chairman, Army Chess Committee. The workshop was conducted at CIMIC Park in Kopay during 12 & 13 March 2022.

The beginners in the workshop got the opportunity to learn, study, explore basic rules, Chess notation, Check Made Patterns and how to use Chess Clock during the workshop. Further, school children were provided with required study materials and other facilities, such as lunch and refreshments during the arrangement.
