Members of the Army’s Corps of Engineer Services (CES), Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) with the support of Sri Lanka Navy troops, Special Task Force (STF) and the Police this morning (7) in Salawa, Kosgama began renovation of damaged houses, estimate of destruction to property of civilians, cleaning of affected drinking water wells, removal of debris and burnt remnants on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva.

Under the close supervision of the Chief Field Engineer, Major General Dhananjaya Karunaratne, Director, Engineering Services, Brigadier R. Peramune, Commanding Officer, 1 CES, five Army teams, including structural engineers of the Army commenced above-mentioned tasks.

To begin with, they also started the renovation of the first two houses, damaged in the blast after summoning the occupants to the location with a view to receiving their opinion on proposed repairs.

One group of Army personnel went on taking damage estimates of the affected houses while another group began calculating the damages caused to private vehicles. Navy personnel in the meantime began cleaning of drinking water wells in the surroundings.

Plans have been made to complete the preliminary estimate-taking within the next three days as the occupants of those houses have begun to return to their original places of residence after the Security Forces cleared the areas.

Similarly, the troops served lunch and dinner to the displaced in the area by taking these meals to their temporary dwelling places.
