Army Continues its House Construction Project: One More New House Vested in Most Deserving Family

Construction of more and more new houses for physically disabled War Heroes, family members of fallen War Heroes, serving Army members and needy families of civilians continues unabated across the country as directed by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage.

By erecting two more houses in the North-Central province, the welfare project was further expanded with the engineering and technical expertise of Army personnel on Saturday (20), where the Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest warmed the first house for late Private D.S Shantha’s family at Kanugahawewa, Kebithigollawa, built through the coordination of Brigadier Anil Peiris, Deputy Commandant at Sapugaskanda Defence Service Command and Staff College. At his request, Mr Ajantha Vass Gunasekara, a well-known philanthropist at Nugegoda volunteered to sponsor Rs 1.1 million as the cost of the house.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army who is also the Colonel of the Regiment Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) as the Chief Guest, together with Mrs Janaki Liyanage, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), Wanni Commander and Brigadier Anil Peiris inaugurated that new house at the auspicious minute in accordance with traditions amid religious rites and rituals. Unveiling of a plaque and other associated traditions followed the house-warming as the key to the new house was delivered to the beneficiary at the location by the Chief Guest.

The widow, Mrs Susanthi Renuka, the spouse of the late soldier, Private D.S Shantha and their children symbolically received the keys. Mrs Janaki Liyanage meanwhile gifted a pack of household essentials to the beneficiary.

General Officer Commanding, 21 Division and Commanding Officer of the 5 SLNG warmly welcomed Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage to the location on arrival and the day's Chief Guest amidst ‘Seth Pirith’ chanted by members of the Maha Sangha handed over the key of the Army-erected new home to the beneficiary.

Major General Champaka Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Force Headquarters-Wanni, Major General Sujeewa Hettiarachchi, General Officer Commanding, 62 Division, Major General Nishshyanka Eriyagama, General Officer Commanding, 21 Division, Brigadier Anil Peiris, Deputy Commandant, Defence Services Command and Staff College, Senior Officers, family members of those two families, relatives and troops who contributed to the construction participated in the warming ceremony.
