Army Chief Visits Jaffna Peninsula

The Thalsevana Army Resort inaugurated its newest branch in Kayts during a brief ceremony on 28 March 2024. Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army, graced the occasion as the chief guest.

The Commander of the Army was warmly welcomed by Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B. Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, the Commander, Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) on arrival at the premises. Afterwards, the Army inaugurated the new facility by unveiling the special plaque and cutting a ribbon. Subsequently, the gathering conducted a tour in the premises.

The new branch features a dormitory accommodating 80 guests and a dining hall for 32 guests at a time, addressing a long-felt need for proper accommodation in the area. The Thalsevana Army Resort - Kayts is in its initial phase, with plans for additional facilities that will be added soon.

Afterwards, the Army Chief took some time off to visit Rev. Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam, Bishop of Jaffna together with a few Senior Officers and had a cordial interaction.

Later on, the Commander of the Army reached the 52 Infantry Division and Major General S.W.B. Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, the General Officer Commanding, 51 Infantry Division extended a warm welcome to the Army Chief before the troops greeted him in a Drive Pass.

Addressing the SF-J troops, the Commander of the Army emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline in challenging times and highlighted the Army's new and ongoing welfare programmes for its personnel. Towards the end, an exchange of mementoes took place between the Army Chief and Commander, SF-J. Adding memories to the visit, the Commander of the Army planted a tamarind plant in the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna premises.

The Military Secretary, General Officers Commanding of 52 and 55 Infantry Divisions, Commander, Logistic Command – Jaffna, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks also took part in the day’s programme.
