Army 61st Anniversary Culminates with Pirith &;amp; Alms

An all night Pirith chanting ceremony on Sunday (10) culminated with an alms giving at Sri Bodhirajaramaya Panagoda, on Monday (11) marked the formal conclusion of the Army Day and the Army’s 61st Anniversary celebration that began on 1st October 2010.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, accompanied by President Seva Vanitha Army Branch, Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya attended the Pirith chanting and alms-giving organized by the Army Buddhist Assocation, led by Major General H. L. Weeratunge. The ceremony was inaugurated as the Commander of the Army placed the Casket of Relics on a specially arranged podium in the traditionally decorated Pirith Mandapaya and invited the monks to formally start the ceremony offering betel leaves, the ‘Deheth Wattiya’ in keeping with age old norms.

Senior Officers of the Army, relatives of the War Heroes and a large crowd of officers and other ranks also attended the Pinkama.

Chief incumbent Bambalapitiya Vajiraramaya and Anunayake of Amarapura Sri Dhammarakshitha Nikaya Most Ven. Thrikunamale Ananda Thero conducted the religious rites during the Pirith Chanting and the alms-giving.
