Armoured Corps Sets a New Precedent; Commander Opens Most Modern Utility Complex for Soldiers

Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), one of the most widely acclaimed pioneering regiments in the Army setting an unequalled example to others, gifted a four-storeyed utility building complex with sophisticated luxurious facilities to all Other Ranks on Saturday (26) at Rock House SLAC Regimental Headquarters premises.

The driving force behind the mega project, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army who is also the Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) graced the ceremonial opening ceremony of this building as the Chief Guest.

The novel idea of having a new state of the art modern building complex that houses a fully air-conditioned Dining Hall for more than 600 troopers at one time, a gymnasium, a spacious Board Room, Facilities for indoor Badminton and Billiard,   Accommodation for Other Ranks, Roof-top garden, reading rooms, administrative units, entertainment facilities, etc was conceived by the Commander of the Army as a young officer in the SLAC Regimental Headquarters.

However, Lieutenant General Jayasuriya in less than a year of his assumption of office got all initial designing work and architectural requirements organized and ensured the construction project was properly on track, particularly in his capacity as the Colonel of the SLAC Regiment. Exactly a month ago, the Commander visited the work site and requested the work be expedited.

Sophisticated, yet with most finely done architectural designs and modern technologically advanced accessories, the whole complex will remain a living monument to both SLAC officers and other ranks since the entire cost for the project has been shared by the Regimental funds.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya after the ceremonial opening of his eagerly anticipated brainchild at the invitation of SLAC Centre Commandant Brigadier Indunil Ranasinghe visited the spacious interior of the utility building in order to see for himself in the company of several senior officers who were responsible for its construction.  Commander impressed with how accommodation dormitories  have been organized on the same floor, perhaps being the one and only regiment to have done so, shared a couple of views with officers in relation to sustained maintenance of the status quo of the constructions.

The newly refurbished and completely renovated spacious TV hall with luxurious facilities was also presented to the Other Ranks on the same occasion by the visiting Commander of the Army.

This new added wing with its most modern multimedia screens plus an LED type broad screen TV set is able to house more than 250 Other Ranks at one turn and is regarded hitherto a much-needed entertainment facility in the Regimental Headquarters.

The visiting Commander on his arrival at the SLAC Regimental Headquarters was greeted with a Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour after he was welcomed in keeping with military traditions.
