Amid Full Military Honours, Lt Gen H. V Athukorale Laid to Rest

The military funeral of late Lieutenant General (Retd) H.V Athukorale VSV psc FBIM of Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) took place at Borella General Cemetery this evening (23), amid honours in the presence of a large gathering of mourners, including past Commanders of the Army, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva and veterans.

Troops in accordance with military traditions received the remains, presenting arms before being taken on the gun carriage. As the funeral procession reached the main entrance of the cemetery, a representative gathering of senior officers formally, received the coffin.

Late Lt Gen Athukorale's coffin draped in the National flag afterwards began to inch its way towards the crematorium as all gathered at the main entrance, lined up behind the coffin.

The formal Special Part I Order, issued by the Commander of the Army was then read out to the mourners as the occasion turned solemn. The troops in conformity with military traditions then saluted him presenting symbolic gun salute, the highest tribute a military officer, could get in the event of his demise.

Minutes after the Last Post, the bugle call that sounded, indicating that the great soldier has gone to his final rest, the remains were taken to the crematorium as everyone stood in respect. Seconds after that, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army presented the bereaved family with the decorations and medals late Lt General Athukorale had earned.

The military funeral was meticulously organized under the direct supervision of the Adjutant General and with the coordination of Major General Mahinda Mudalige, Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Light Infantry.

Past Commanders including General (Retd) Shantha Kottegoda, General (retd) Daya Ratnayake, General (retd) Jagath Jayasuriya, and a host of veterans were among the mourners.

Lieutenant General (Retd) H.V Athukorale, one of the most respected outstanding Officers ever produced by the SLLI and the Army passed away on Friday (20) while under treatment at the Colombo Army Hospital at the age of 89 years.

Lieutenant General (Retd) Athukorale as an Officer par excellence, in his capacity as a Lieutenant Colonel in the SLLI Regimental Headquarters, translated the SLLI Regiment’s history, and was instrumental in composing the SLLI Regimental Song.
