64 Infantry Division Initiates Support for Proposed ‘2nd Coconut Triangle’ Distributing Saplings

Intended to fully support the government's plan to demarcate the ‘2nd Coconut Triangle’ of the country in the Mullaittivu region, 64 Infantry Division troops under command to the Security Force Headquarters-Mullaittivu initiated a project to distribute coconut saplings among civilians, interested in cultivating coconuts after inviting the beneficiaries to the 64 Infantry Division HQ on Saturday (9).

The distribution arrangement, attended by Major General M.K Jayawardane RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces- Mullaittivu as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Major General M.S Dewapriya USP ndc, General Officer Commanding, 64 Infantry Division coincided with the ‘National Coconut Week’ and gave away 100 coconut saplings to 55 families living in Oddusudan under the Phase 1 of the ongoing project.

Mullaittivu district is expected to spearhead the cultivation with some 20,000 coconut saplings under the proposed establishment of the '2nd Coconut Triangle' covering Jaffna, Mannar and Mullaitivu districts. The Security Force Headquarters Mullaittivu has been entrusted the task of planting 20,000 saplings in the region, taking the lead with the cooperation of the civilians. The Wellamkulam Army Farm giving an impetus to the project offered 2700 coconut plants to state authorities for free for distribution among civilians.

The General Officer Commanding of the 64 Infantry Division launched the project and organized the distribution arrangement with the support of his troops. General Officers Commanding of 68 and 59 Infantry Divisions, Senior Officers, Other Ranks and civilians participated in the event.
