553 Infantry Brigade in Vadamarachchi Provides Purified Drinking Water to Students & Villagers

553 Infantry Brigade troops of the 55 Infantry Division under command to the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna with financial support given by the Sri Lankan community in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) installed a Water Purification Plant for students learning at Aliyavalai Church of Ceylon Tamil Mix School, Vadamarachchi and villagers in the Vadamarachchi East.

The plant, expected to provide purified drinking water to students and needy people in the Vadamarachchi East round the clock was vested in the students and villagers on Wednesday (8 March) during a simple inaugural ceremony.

The General Officer Commanding, 55 Infantry Division, Major General Prasanna Gunaratne graced the inaugural occasion as the Chief Guest and Mr George Hettiarachchi representing the Sri Lankan community in the United Arab Emirates who sponsored the project, participated in the inauguration as distinguished guests.

After the main event, Major General Prasanna Gunarathne gifted a couple of trophies that could be used during the school Sports Meet to the principal. Major General Swarna Bothota, Commander, Security Forces- Jaffna worked closely with the Sri Lankan community in the United Arab Emirates to make this project a reality considering the plight of deserving students and the community.

As per guidelines given by the 55 Infantry Division's General Officer Commanding, Major General Prasanna Gunarathne, the Commanding Officer of the 12 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Major W.T.S Nayanajeewa with his technically-qualified troops carried out the construction of the purification plant.

During the brief inaugural ceremony, troops provided snacks and refreshments to all the school children attending the occasion. The Divisional Secretary for Vadamarachchi - East, Divisional Educational Director, Public Health Inspector of the area, Commander of the 553 Infantry Brigade, Grama Niladari, Commanding Officers of 10 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and 12 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment were among attendees at the inauguration.
