Jaffna-based troops of the Sri Lanka Army that have been at the forefront of grooming national level sportsmen for the country and stimulating the youth for varieties of sports on Saturday (10) gathered Jaffna Youth Team and Kaddaikadu Youth Team for a friendly soccer encounter at Kaddaikadu Football Ground.
Aimed at promoting sportsmanship, reconciliation, cohesion and identifying inborn sports talents of the Jaffna youth in the North, the friendly soccer match was organized as a conceptual guidance of Major General Prasanna Gunarathne, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division who has initiated a couple of such projects in the area for promotion of goodwill and understanding between the Army and civil sports clubs.
At the invitation of the 55 Division's General Officer Commanding, the Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna, Major General Chandana Wijayasundera witnessed the inauguration of the match as the Chief Guest.
This match was staged amidst roars of applause and cheers of a large gathering of sportsmen in the area. Jaffna Youth Team and Kaddaikadu Youth Team were respectively sponsored by 51 Division HQ and 55 Division HQ with the blessings of the Jaffna. After an impressive show, the Kaddaikadu Youth Team won this friendly encounter by 6-0 goals.
During the match, both teams did well and exhibited their skills and performances. The same evening saw the day's Chief Guest, Major General Chandana Wijayasundera, Commander of Security Forces awarding trophies and prizes to the winners and achievers in the friendly tussle.
General Officers Commanding of 51 and 52 Divisions, Commander Forward Maintenance Area (North), Brigadier General Staff SFHQ-Jaffna, Brigade Commanders of 552 and 553 Brigades, state officials, Commanding Officers of respective battalions, troops in the Jaffna peninsula and civilians in the area enthusiastically viewed the encounter
