The 55 Division HQ of the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna with the objective of empowering a widow with two daughters and a son donated a sewing machine and allocated a separate place for her to make a living in the general area of Kevil, Jaffna.
The sewing machine was sponsored by Mrs P Subadra of Colombo at the invitation of the 55 Division.
The courageous widow, Mrs Maduran Nadiya was found leading a hand to mouth life with her two daughters and the son after death of her husband when the troops spotted their pathetic living condition and informed the GOC of their plight.
On Saturday (29), Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division donated the sewing machine, worth about Rs 175,000/= and inaugurated the separate location for her to sell her sewn garments in an effort to provide relief to their economic burden.
The beneficiary, Mrs Maduran Nadiya, two teenaged daughters and the 4 year old son recently lost her husband in an accident who was the bread winner of the family.
