54 Division Carries Out Dengue Eradication Work

In order to help nab the spread of Dengue epidemic in the holy Madu Shrine area and other Mannar suburbs, the 54 Division recently conducted a full-day cleaning campaign with the participation of several hundreds of troops.

In response to requests, made by clergy at the Madu Shrine, Rev Emil and Rev Ruban, over 100 soldiers took part in a cleaning project in and around the Madu Shrine and the premises around the Madu junction new church, expected to be consecrated shortly. Army backhoes supported removal of debris and old garbage dumps from the area.

Meanwhile, considering rainy weather prevailing in Mannar and looming threat of Dengue, the 54 Division troops after a formal discussion with the District Secretary for Mannar, Medical Officers of Health, state and non-governmental agencies, carried out another mammoth full-day Shramadana project on Wednesday (9) on the directions given by Brigadier M.A.M Dias, General Officer Commanding, 54 Division. The campaign covered the Mannar General Hospital, District Chest Clinic and a few other state premises.

Mannar has recorded a total of 18 Dengue cases by the end of October 2011.

Troops during the Shramadana project cleaned up places of polluted water retention, Mannar General Hospital compound including areas surrounding operation theatres, kitchen areas and other major un-cleaned places in the Mannar township. Four Army tractors were used to remove garbage heaps from those premises.
