Major General Udaya Herath assumed duties as the 29th General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 53 Division HQ on Friday (17) during a simple ceremony at the Divisional Headquarters in Habarana.
At the outset, the incoming GOC reviewed the Guard Turnout, presented by 8 Gajaba Regiment troops on arrival at the Headquarters premises. Afterwards, he received the salute of the Guard of Honour, held in his honour.
Subsequently, the newly-appointed GOC assumed office, amid chanting of 'Seth Pirith' of Buddhist monks by leaving his signature for an official document in order to signify the acceptance of the new office.
In line with formalities, the new GOC planted a sapling, prior to the formal troop address where he expressed his vision. Air Mobile Brigade, 532 and 533 Brigade Commanders, Staff Officers and Other Ranks participated in the day’s event.
He succeeds Major General Sanjeewa Fernando, who has now been appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 52 Division.
