Troops of 3 (v) Gemunu Watch of the 613 Infantry Brigade under the 61 Infantry Division of the Security Force HQ - West located adjoining the river Nilwala in Matara in a daring rescue operation saved the life of a 74-years-old man who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the river from the Matara Mahanama bridge at around 8.00 pm on 19 November 2022.
Those troops standing in a nearby duty point promptly swept into action under the directions of their overlooking Commanding Officer of 3 (v) Gemunu Watch, and a team of soldiers in a boat immediately spotted the 74-year old victim and managed to rescue him while he was being carried in the flowing water.
After the first aid, he was rushed to the Matara Hospital for further treatment.
