Troops of the 241 Infantry Brigade of the 24 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ - East in coordination with officials in the Marine Environment Protection Authority launched a beach cleaning programme along the coastal belt in Sinnamuhattuvaram, Akkaraipattu on Friday (9 June).
After the highly polluted nature of the beach was brought to the notice of the General Officer Commanding, 24 Infantry Division, Major General W Chandrasiri RSP USP psc, 11 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) troops of the 241 Infantry Brigade were instructed to undertake the task under the supervision of the Commander, 241 Infantry Brigade Colonel L.S.D.N Pathirathna RSP USP and the Commanding Officer, 11 SLNG.
Towards the end of the programme, troops collected a large stock of pollutants, inclusive of plastic waste, polythene sheets, tins and cans, etc and transported them for recycling and disposal.
