The enthusiastic team of football players in the 22 Division of the Security Force Headquarters-East (SFHQ-E) who competed in the Inter Division Football Finals 2022 of the SFHQ-E emerged victorious for the 4th consecutive time, defeating the 23 Division’s team for 1-0 during the finals at Ehamparam grounds in Trincomalee on Saturday (10).
Both teams played aggressively from the start of the match and posed threats to opponents in both teams, but 22 Division players, not to be outdone, kept the opponents at bay by foiling all scoring chances of the opponents. The tournament was conducted with the participation of football teams representing the SFHQ-East, 22, 23, 24 Infantry Divisions and Forward Maintenance Area -East. After playing a series of games by the teams, the selected best players were given an opportunity to play for the Division Team. The victorious 22 Division team consisted of the players from 2 (V) Gajaba Regiment of 221 Infantry Brigade, 24 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment of 222 Infantry Brigade and 6 Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (Rft) of the 223 Infantry Brigade.
Major General Sujeewa Hettiarachchi, Commander SF-East, graced the finals as the chief guest and awarded certificates, medals and trophies to the winners. The tournament was organized under the directions of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 22 Infantry Division, Major General Saliya Amunugama and Colonel Sujeewa Rathnayake, Commander 221 Infantry Brigade who coordinated the entire event.
Commander, FMA (East), Major General Chanaka Meththananda, Major General Shewantha Kulathunga, GOC, 23 Infantry Division, Major General Wajira Welagedara, 24 Infantry Division, all Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Senor Officers and distinguished invitees graced the occasion.
A display of Army Angampora games, a Taekwondo event and a display of Western Band of the Gajaba Regiment, entertained the gathering of football fans and distinguished guests. Towards the end of the awarding ceremony, the Commander, Security Forces-East presented the Security Forces-East Football Trophy - 2022 to the winning team of the 22 Division.
