12 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (12 SLSR) troops of the 613 Infantry Brigade of the 61 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ - West responding to a request made by the District Secretary, Matara swiftly reacted to save the life of a 3-year-old girl who remained trapped in her own house being unable to move out in the midst of gushing flood waters at Wellethota on Tuesday (16) morning.
The kid affected with epilepsy and high fever was unable to flee with her parents as water levels were fast rising when their helpless situation was brought to the notice of the troops as the river, Nilwala in Matara has begun overflowing at certain low-lying areas.
A team of 12 SLSR troops using a boat immediately reached their home, evacuated them and transported the sick girl immediately to the Matara General Hospital. After emergency medical treatment, the ailing child was handed over to the parents, according to hospital sources.
Major N.P.S Jayasekara, Commanding Officer, 12 SLSR took the lead in the rescue operation according to the directions given by the Commander, 613 Infantry Brigade, General Officer Commanding of the 61 Infantry Division with the blessings of the Commander, Security Forces - West.
