51 Infantry Division troops of the Security Force HQ - Jaffna in the peninsula on account of Christmas spirits distributed gifts and sweets to little children near churches in Jaffna on Christmas day (Dec 25) with the intention of strengthening bonds of goodwill between civil and military communities.
The generous event was initiated on a concept of the former Commander Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General (Retd) Chandana Wijayasundara and former General Officer Commanding (GOC), 51 Infantry Division, Major General Mahendra Fernando during their tenure of office in Jaffna.
The program was launched by Major General Wajira Welagedara, GOC, 51 Infantry Division under the supervision of all Brigade Commanders and Commanding Officers serving under the 51 Infantry Division.
More than 1000 children got gifts and sweets on Christmas day from Jaffna troops who reached those locations greeting them.
The symbolic distribution ceremony was held at St. Mary's Cathedral, Jaffna in the presence of Most Reverend Dr Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam, the Bishop of Jaffna Diocese and the GOC, 51 Infantry Division, Officers, Other Ranks and cheerful children.
