'Viru Daru' Society Distributes Schols to Ranaviru Children


One more phase of the 10th project for award of scholarships to 250 children of War Hero families under the auspices of the Viru Daru Society took place at the Army Headquarters on Saturday (12) during a ceremony, headed by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army.

Viru Daru Society’s own initiatives and arrangements enabled distribution of these scholarships to children of Army personnel belonging to all Regiments in the Army, including children of five totally dependent War Heroes at Attidiya Mihindu Seth Medura. In addition the Viru Daru Society was magnanimous to select a portion of recipients from civil employees serving the Army.

Ms Deshani Jayasuriya, Chairperson, Viru Daru Society welcomed the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch on arrival at the venue.

Under the programme, each child (1-5 Grade) is to receive Rs. 10,000/=, (5-10 Grade) Rs. 15,000/= and above the O/L a sum of Rs. 20,000/= after these deposits are made to a special ‘Viru Daru Sisu Udana’ account at People’s Bank. During the first stage of the scheme on Saturday (12), 150 children received these scholarships.

The audience was taken by surprise when a novice Buddhist monk turned Viru Daru Society member, the son of an Army Sergeant too appeared on stage to receive a scholarship as a former member of the Army Viru Daru Society. The Viru Daru Society appeared highly impressed with this particular scholarship grant since it created history among scholarship recipients.

Senior SVAB members, Viru Daru Society members, senior officers and a large gathering attended the distribution ceremony.

Breakdown of the recipients as per Regiments and different centres is as follows;

Mihindu Seth Medura (five recipients), Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (seven recipients), Sri Lanka Artillery (six recipients), Sri Lanka Engineers (six recipients),  Sri Lanka Signal Corps (six recipients), Sri Lanka Light Infantry (six recipients), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (nine recipients), Gemunu Watch (nine recipients), Gajaba Regiment (twelve recipients), Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (sixteen recipients), Mechanized Infantry Regiment (two recipients), Commando Regiment (three recipients), Military Intelligence Corps (seven recipients), Special Force (two recipients), Corps of Engineer Services (four recipients), Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (three recipients), Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (six recipients), Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (four recipients), Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (two recipients), Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (six recipients), Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (five recipients), Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (three recipients), Sri Lanka National Guard (seven recipients), Sri Lanka Army Pioneer Corps (one recipient), Sri Lanka Rifle Corps (one recipient), National Cadet Corps (one recipient) and seven civil staff members.
