Army Chief Commends Notable Service of Retiring Senior Officer

Major General A.M.A. Abeyawardana WWV RWP RSP ndc was invited to the office of Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, on 04 May 2026, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished military career spanning over 34 years.

Major General A.M.A. Abeyawardana WWV RWP RSP ndc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake SC 3 on 09 December 1991. Upon successful completion of military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyathalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gemunu Watch on 19 December 1992. After being steadily elevated through the ranks during his service, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 19 May 2025. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 20 May 2026 on reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he holds the appointments of General Officer Commanding, 58 Infantry Division and Colonel of the Regiment, the Gemunu Watch.

Throughout his illustrious military career, the Senior Officer has held numerous key appointments. He has served as Platoon Commander, 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Intelligence Officer, 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding, 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding, Rear Headquarters, 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Adjutant, Infantry Training Centre, Officer Commanding, 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Staff Officer, Sri Lanka Battalion, United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Operational and Training Officer, 9th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Second-in-Command, 9th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Staff Officer 1 (Administration), Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Commanding Officer, 24th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Staff Officer 1 (Logistics), Regimental Centre, the Gemunu Watch, Deputy Centre Commandant, Regimental Centre, the Gemunu Watch and Overlooking Centre Commandant, Regimental Centre, the Gemunu Watch.

He has also served as Director, Ranaviru Seva Authority and Colonel of the Regiment, the Gemunu Watch.

Apart from the above appointments, he has held various responsibilities at Infantry Division and Brigade levels in the capacities of Officiating General Staff Officer 1 (Operations), General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating), Colonel (General Staff), Commander of an Infantry Brigade, Deputy General Officer Commanding and General Officer Commanding.

In recognition of his dedicated and exemplary service, he was awarded the Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya, Rana Wickrama Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama (awarded twice).

The Senior Officer has successfully completed several local and overseas courses, including the Basic Marksmanship Course, Junior Staff Course, Unit Accounts Course for Officers, Unit Administration Course and National Security and Strategic Studies Course.

His overseas training includes the Young Officers Tactical Course in Pakistan, Junior Command Course in India and Platoon Weapon Course for Officers in India.

In addition to his military qualifications, the Senior Officer has obtained a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, a Master of Science in Disaster Analysis, Management and Mitigation at the University of Colombo and an Executive Diploma in Disaster Analysis and Management at the Institute of Human Resource Advancement, University of Colombo.
