Army Headquarters Hosts Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival 2026

In celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2026, the Army Headquarters organised a New Year cultural festival on 24 April 2026 at the Regimental Centre of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry.

Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, together with Mrs Swendrini Rodrigo, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), graced the occasion as Chief Guests.

Upon their arrival, the Commander of the Army was warmly welcomed with a traditional dance performance. The formal proceedings commenced with the singing of the National Anthem and the Army Song. A two-minute silence was then observed in honour of the nation’s fallen war heroes.

Afterwards, a colourful Avurudu dance performance was held, followed by the commencement of traditional New Year games. The event featured an engaging blend of cultural entertainment and festive activities, including a variety of traditional games and performances. Thereafter, the Commander of the Army, together with the invited guests, ceremonially lit the traditional oil lamp at the specially designed Gemi Gedara.

Concluding the day’s programme, the Commander of the Army and the special invitees presented prizes and trophies to the winners of the various competitions held during the festival.

Major General K.V.N.P. Premaratne RSP USP nps psc, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, Principal Staff Officers, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks participated in the event.
